A "HOT ZONE" FIELD TRIP

The HotZone serves the community in some unexpected ways. Recently, a group of 26 high school students from the CORAL Youth Institute, a project sponsored by the YMCA of Greater Long Beach to provide intensive computer learning programs, toured the area to experience the freedom of the wireless web firsthand. Technology training is an integral aspect of the Institute and all necessary equipment is provided to participating students.

CORAL teens armed with laptops, configured their wireless cards and surfed the ‘Net, downloaded video clips and conducted interviews to determine how the new services was being received by the public.

“The teens were very excited by the new technology and how easy it was for them to access it,” said Bob Cabeza, director of training and technology for the Institute. The students also can check out laptops to do homework or community service projects. “The hope is that they’ll frequent the area to hook up to the Internet for fun and academic research.”
